step 4: The Marshmallow
- Create a Display layer and add the cube to it so you can hide it from the scene
- Change your Image Plane to be the photograph that has the two marshmallows
- Create a cylinder and sculpt the marshmallow to be as close to the real one as possible
material Settings
- Assign a new Blinn material to the marshmallow
- Adjust the settings to get a more realistic appearance. Here are some of the key elements that you should to focus on:
- Color: you can create a custom color mixing white and a hint of yellow. Another option is to add a custom texture map by clicking on the checker box.
- Transparency: you may need to add some transparency to the object to help with the translucent effect
- Bump Mapping: modify the appearance of the surface without altering it.
- Diffuse: gives the ability to reflect light in all directions
- Translucence: marshmallows are slightly translucent. This setting will allow the light to be absorbed by the material and the and then diffused in all directions.
- Translucence Depth: simulates how the light travels through the object
- Translucence Focus: controls how much the light scatters through the object, or the softness of the light
TIPS:
- Create a texture map from the photograph to get closer to the details of the image
- If you create your own texture map, you can adjust the levels of that image to use it as a bump map and have more control over the appearance of the object's surface
- A displacement map could be another option to create texture. However, since the surface will be altered, this option could also increase the render time.
Additional Settings
- If you scroll down the Attributes Editor, you can find additional material settings under Specular Shading
- Here are some of the main settings to work with:
- Eccentricity: controls the size of the highlights
- Specular Roll Off: controls the softness of the highlights
- Reflectivity: gives the object the ability to reflect its surroundings. In the case of the marshmallow, this attribute should be a very low number
